Media and Technology

Web Design: Designing a website, adding content, and participating in the international Student Blogging Challenge will be the focus of the Web Design semester.  Students will learn the design tools for the full version of Wordpress, select themes, add widgets and manipulate the layout of their own website.  Content consisting of fiction and nonfiction pieces, and  photographs will be added to the website.  Students will connect with other students at EMS and around the world through the sharing of posts and comments on their websites.  This semester long class is paired with Ceramics.

Computer Literacy: students will create a variety of documents individually and collaboratively using Google applications.  Learn how to create essays and school projects that you can work on from a computer, tablet or phone.  Collaborate with other students to create slideshows and projects together, and learn to work together on those projects even when you’re not in the same room. Improve your typing skills with daily practice that will pay off with increased speed and accuracy.  Learn to improve your communication skills through a hands-on technology approach.  This semester long class is paired with Hands On Art History Creations.

Technology and the 4 C's: Learn to create, communicate, collaborate and develop critical thinking skills in this yearlong technology centered course.  Students will create a variety of documents individually and collaboratively using Google applications.  Learn how to create essays and school projects that you can work on from a computer, tablet or phone.  Collaborate with other students to create slideshows and projects and learn to work together on those projects even when you’re not in the same room.  Learn to use online organizational tools to simplify your schedule that can be accessed from both phones and computers. Improve your typing skills with daily practice that will pay off with increased speed and accuracy.  Develop critical thinking skills by creating animations and games by learning how to control characters and scenes using a fun visual coding program.  Add sounds and drawings to personalize your games.  During this year long course, students will learn to effectively organize, communicate and collaborate using online resources available on computers, tablets, and phones.

Video Production: This class is designed to introduce 7th and 8th grade middle school students to the fundamentals of multimedia and video production. Students are engaged in hands-on experiences, use communications skills, and develop strategies to learn the basics of video pre-production, production, and post-production.  Students produce video products in the form of weekly news broadcasts to the school and other video pieces such as public service announcements, commercials, and interviews with community members. They learn to operate audio and video equipment and perform exercises to develop technical production skills. Students use editing software such as iMovie and Final Cut on computers to import video footage, edit, create titles and special effects, and export their final video to DVD.  As they use technology, students also develop skills in planning, organization, script writing, interpersonal communication, team building, and media literacy.  Students participate in every aspect of video production from editing to directing to on-screen talent.
